"I get a lot of cold emails and cold calls. There's a common phrase that I especially dislike in these outreach attempts...
"I'd love to learn more about your business and show you a demo",
Here's why:
When people ask me to meet so they can learn about my business, it tells me they've done zero research on my business. Why would I meet with you if you don't know about my business? Especially if they are trying to sell me something that isn't even slightly relevant.
Additionally, "show me a demo" isn't specific enough. Tell me exactly what you'll be helping me with. I don't care about the demo, I care about what you'll help me with.
Here's what I think sounds better:
Identify a pain point (or a potential pain point) and say "one of my colleagues actually just helped a very similar company solve this exact problem. Happy to loop him in for a quick chat. Have a few minutes on Friday morning to hear how he did it?"
Be Specific
When you're writing a cold email, being specific and crisp in your messaging is key.
Here's what this means:
Instead of saying something generic - say something like:
"I saw you added 2 AEs last month with the additions of Bob and Emily"
“Congrats on the new integration with Intercom and Zendesk”
Looks like video content is a priority given you’re releasing 3 videos a week (I just saw your recent one on email deliverability)
Don’t let your messages be confused with automated templates. You don’t have to do much, but you have to show you’ve done some level of research. You're competing with thousands of other sellers who are using AI to write their emails, you need to be different!
Ultimately, this part of the email isn't what's going to make somebody book a meeting, but it will make them keep reading.

5 Prospecting Ideas
Looking to find qualified prospects? Here are 5 prospecting tips that you can use today:
Search by keyword on LinkedIn
Search by keyword in LinkedIn Sales Navigator. For example, if I sell to marketers, I might search “Mailchimp” or “Google Analytics” in the search bar. Then add a few more filters to match your ICP.
Use the “Following Your Company” Filter on LinkedIn Sales Navigator
Use the “Following Your Company” Filter on LinkedIn Sales Navigator. You’ll often find people who follow your company on LinkedIn and aren’t customers. These are great prospects to reach out to.
Job Postings
Use job postings to collect information about a company’s priorities. For example, if you sell SEO services, find companies looking to hire content writers. See what type of information they give in the job post. Use that in your outreach
Go Where Your Prospects Go
Go on public forums. Subreddits, public slack groups, etc. See what people are talking about and if something comes up that’s relevant to your offering - DM them. Caution: This is a long term play, you must be an active participant in the community, don’t spam.
Follow Your Customers
Keep tabs on current customers for when they move companies. This is a great opportunity to reach out.
Creative Tactic of the Week
“Reaching out several people on the same team is common. I like to own up to that fact and call it out, it can make it help seem more human. For example, if I reach out to Ron, and also their boss Emily, I’ll say something along the lines of
- "I also sent a note to Ron as I thought this would be relevant for them as well"
- "Did Emily send you this already?"
It shows that it's not automated, and makes it more targeted”
