Pro tip: You know that sentence in your cold email that reminds your prospect what their job title and responsibilities are? Delete it. Replace it with something more targeted.

Bad examples look like this:

  • “As a marketing manager”

  • “I saw you are the Product Manager at ACME”

Prospects know what their title and responsibilities are, this type of information is simply filling up valuable real estate in an email. And worst of all, it looks fully automated, which won’t catch anyone’s attention.

Instead of focusing on what their job is, focus on what problem someone in their role might be facing. That could be something like:

  • Looks like your team is using Mailchimp to send newsletters. I’m guessing you’re running into (insert challenge)

  • Your team announced a new integration with Zendesk. Oftentimes when product teams integrate with new tools, they run into (insert challenge)

Start off with context sooner and ditch the useless sentences.

2 Things to Stop Doing on Cold Calls

  1. Overusing a Prospect’s Name

Sounds counterintuitive right? Most people think you should be saying prospects' names on cold calls, and we agree to an extent. But it's the overuse of it that we don't like.

Think of how often you actually use somebody's name on a phone call when it's someone you know. Most times you say it right at the beginning, but not much more than that.

When you're calling a prospect and saying their name too much, you sound overly salesy, and much like the cliche salesperson everybody dislikes.

  1. Overcomplicating what your company does

Many people get caught up in trying to sound smart, that they fail to effectively communicate what their company actually does.

Here’s an example from Demandcurve

  • Before: "We're a fully autonomous ad-buying platform”

  • After: We make your ads more profitable

Prospects don't often talk about fully autonomous ad-buying platforms, but they do talk about making their ads more profitable. Use the language of your prospects!
